The other day I was innocently sitting in the food court at the shops; eating my way through a kebab and pondering the great mysteries of the universe.
When out of the blue, a mother smacks her son at the table next to me and suddenly even the beautiful combination of lamb, chicken and flat bread became tasteless.
I hate public acts of physical child discipline. Whenever I see a parent smack or slap their child in public, I always cringe.
Even when I'm attending a party that my mum's dragged me to, and there's a bunch of family friends and their kids; I still hate seeing one of the parents make friendly conversation with people one minute, then pull their disruptive child over and smack him the next.
I'm OK with parents disciplining their kids in an appropriate manner, even if they do believe that it's humane to spank them. But as long as I sit in the food courts or public areas of society; under no circumstances is it ever acceptable to give your child physical discipline in PUBLIC. If you feel inclined to do so at home when they throw the TV remote at the cat= wonderful.
But when you're in public and your child dares to swear, is it too much to ask that you just yell at them? Or give them extra vegetables for dinner that night? Or better yet; go to the food court, buy an ice cream in their favourite flavour and slowly eat it in front of them. Or buy the ice cream, act like you'll give it to them and then give it to a stranger.
Just don't ever smack them.
Not while I'm a member of the public. And most certainly not while I have a kebab.
